What’s the score?

On the new album
— Our goal with Too Much Is Not Enough was to make every track unique and not like the other ones. They all had to have single potential. During the process we worked in four different studios trying to find new angles and not get lazy, says Michael Lohse.

— Our music is relentless and naive. When no one knows what anyone else is playing, that’s when it gets good, says bass player Josef Zackrisson.

On writing songs
— Songs aren’t actually written, they’re already out there just waiting to get picked up. I never sit down and think, I have to write a song now. If I don’t write anything there’s nothing to record and that means lots of time for doing other things, says Michael.

— Our music is intense and straight forward. If you want guitar solos and wanky instrumental sections, listen to something else. We focus on producing top tracks and the shorter they are, the better. The way music sounded during the Motown era has always fascinated me.

On the music bizniz
— The relationship between us, our record label and the music business as a whole is quite liberal. They use us and we use them, says Leo.
— If you’re being honest, he only reason to sign up with a record company is that you want to sell records. We’re no exception, says Michael.

— The Kooks is all about positive thinking, that’s our common ground. We can make things happen. The positivity comes from within, anyone can make use of it.
For us, it’s not about changing the world or the future. It’s about what goes on right here, right now.
