GUNNAR MALMQUIST is decended from family with a rich tradition of music. His father played the violin and the organ. His mother is a professional singer and an organist as well. He began to play the cello in early years and he got his first musical education at the local conservatory in his hometown Eskilstuna in Sweden. 1969 he was accepted as a pupil in the soloclass at the Royal academy of music in Stockholm. In the summertimes he took part in the cuorses of chambermusic in Grozjan, Yougoslavia aranged by the international organization "Jeuness Musical". During a couple of years he continued higher musical education at the music high school of music in Gothembemberg with professor Guido Vecchi, a Swedish mastercellist with an Italian extraction. In the summer 1974 he visited the masterclass of "Academie du Tibor Varga in Sion, Switzerland. The same summer he also took part in the masterclasses of professor Antinio Janigro at the summeracademy of "Mozarteum" in Salzburg. After that summer he became a pupil in the ordinary masterclass of Antonio Janigro at "Mozarteum". After his studies he became a position as a solocellist in the Symphony Orchestra of Umeå in Sweden witch he hold in a period of fifteen years. In 1979 hi became an excangescoraship from the Swedish Institut (SI) for studies at the Chopinacademy in Warszaw. Beside his duty as a solocellist in the orchestra he has been engaged as a soloist with dif-ferent orchestras in Sweden. He has also given recitals with pianists and been engaged abroad (Finland, Germany, Italy etc.). He has also given classes for young students in summer courses during the years. For the moment he works as a celloteacher at the " Institut of music" in Mariehamn, Åland and besides he gives recitals and , chamberconserts. also on tours.
