Apolda

In the beginning....

The history of the Dobermann starts with a man called Frédéric Louis Dobermann, who was born on 2nd 1834. Unfortunately, we have very few biographical details about him. We know that he lived in the town of Apolda, Thuringai in East Germany. Much has been written about Herr Dobermann but little is based on fact, some of it contradictory. Even the town Council in Apolda cannot produce any original or authentic information about him. We can only realy on information given by people who knew Herr Dobermann personally like his son and some of the early breeders. One source tells us that he was an offical dog catcher, he collected all the stray dogs, this was advantageous to him as it enabled him to select those he wanted for his breeding program. According to his son (Unser Dobermann 1924 page 127) his father was employed by the Niederrossla-Apolda, Chamber of Accontants, as an officialof the Tax Office. He collected Taxes from defaulters. As with modern day debt-collectors he was not popular, so he took a guard dog whit him for protection, especially when he was carrying large sums of money. Another source states thet Herr Dobermann had a job in the municipal slaughter-house, this is confirmed by an adress book of 1882 in whith we read that he is a skinner living in the Faulbornstrasse. it is possible that this job also involved him with stray dogs, as Herr Max Kunstler states in Unser Dobermann, 1925, page 127. It has also been suggested that Herr Dobermann was a nightwathman and therefore needed a dog for protection during night duty.
