Just a couple of days after Detroit Red Wings won Stanley Cup, Konstantinov, Sergei Mnatsakanov (team masseur) and Slava Fetisov was driving home in a limo. The driver under influence of drugs or/and alcohol crash in to a tree.

Defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov and team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov suffered brain-stem injuries. The accident came six days after the Red Wings won their first Cup in 42 years by sweeping Philadelphia on June 7.

Fetisov recovered in time to play for Detroit in 1997-98 and retired in June after the Red Wings won their second consecutive Stanley Cup. He is now an assistant with the New Jersey Devils.
