The first defenseman taken in the 1991 draft. Niedermayer was selected third overall (after Eric Lindros and Pat Fallon) by New Jersey which received the pick from Toronto in exchange for Tom Kurvers, October 16 1989.

When Niedermayer debuted with the Devils he was the youngest player ever to dress for the club at 18 years, 1 month and 15 days.

He debuted against NY Rangers the 16th of october 1991. He had one assist in his first game.

A member of the 1992 World Junior Championship All-Star Team.

Won Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as MVP of the 1992 Memorial Cup Championship. He assisted on the winning goal in the Championship game.
