Norrtäljeviken Bay

Ten sediment cores were sampled in this bay from depths between 6 and 30 m during the period 1977 - 1980 and X-rayed, the uppermost part in stereo. Four of the cores were sampled in the part of Norrtäljeviken called Kvisthamraviken.

Radiograph of the upper part of core 478 from a depth of 30 m in Norrtäljeviken. The curve, showing the downcore variation in dry bulk density, is based on film-density values, recorded along the centerline of the radiograph. Date of coring: 1979-02-27.

After sampling this gas-rich core increased in length (in the coring tube) with 6 % in about twenty-four hours (from 40.6 to 43.0 cm). This was due to the formation and expansion of gas bubbles, which resulted from the reduced hydrostatic presssure and temperature rise. Therefore the core data were recalculated to represent in situ values. The organic content was rather high in this core. The mean value of the loss on ignition amounted to 14.9 %.
