Cores from Askrikefjärden

Two cores where sampled in this coastal basin in 1982-06-18. The upper part of one of these cores in shown below.

Partly overlapping radiographs of the upper part of sediment core 801 from a depth of 27 m in Askrikefjärden.

In this core the border between the upper laminated, partly annually laminated and the lower bioturbated deposits was situated at a core depth of 25 cm, probably corresponding to a time period around 1920. At this coring site the annual mean mass sedimentation rate (calculated as salt-free) probably amounted to about 0.41 kg/m2 during the 60-year period 1920-1980, corresponding to an annual mean linear sedimentation rate of 4 mm at the state of compaction in 1982. In this laminated part of the core the mean value of the organic content, determined as the loss on ignition, amounted to 15 %.

The salinity, the density , and the pH of the bottom water in the coring tube was 5.5 ‰, 1.004 and 7.20 respectively.
