Photo from 1957 of Filip Hjulström (file in Swedish) and Åke Sundborg (to the right).
The erosion diagram constructed by Hjulström, first published in his thesis (Hjulström, F., 1935: Studies of the morphological activity of rivers as illustrated by the river Fyris. Bull. Geol. Inst. Uppsala, 25), has been included in many geological textbooks.
The erosion diagram, constructed by Sundborg, published in his thesis (Sundborg, Å., 1956: The river Klarälven. A study of fluvial processes. Geogr. Ann., 38) shows the relation between particle size and critical erosion velocity for uniform material of different densities. Curves for the critical erosion velocity for eolian erosion are also included in this diagram. Another diagram in his thesis shows the relation between particle size and critical erosion velocity for uniform material on different slopes (0, 20, 30, and 33 degrees).
In his thesis Sundborg also presented a sediment deposition model, that may be used for calculating the downstream decrease in concentration and grain size of suspended material. This model is further discussed i.a. in: Sundborg, Å. and Calles, B., 2001: Water discharges determined from sediment distributions: a palaeohydrological method. Geogr. Ann., 83 A.
