2001: A Space Odyssey.
Favorite quote from the movie: "Look, Dave, I can see you´re really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill and think things over."
Stanley Kubriks masterpiece from 1968 impresses on all levels, from the legendary opening shot of the space station spinning in space to the tunes of Also Sprach Zarathustra, to the endings psychadelic odyssey (Pun intended and no excuses made!) into the unknown. The film is also well known for being one of the few films where a computer, HAL 9000, is the character people remember. Hal got his name from the well-known computer company IBM. If you move each letter in HAL forward one step in the alphabet you get IBM. 2001 was clearly one of the first of the new "breed" (i.e, one with high budget and decent actors) of science-fiction movies where the emphasis is put on deeper philosphical questions and the relations between characters instead of an excuse to show off the cool special effects. This trend has, alas, not continued to any great degree since 1968, unfortunatly.
