Mondo means world in Italian. In 1962 filmmakers Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi took a filmcrew around the world and documented strange people and customs. This resulted in Mondo cane ("dog's world"), which wasn't the first mondo, but it became a hit and was followed by Mondo cane n. 2 in 1963. More mondo movies followed and the subjects were the ones to be expected: sex, drugs, violence and death. NOTE: Many films using the word "mondo" in the title are actually not Italian, but may very well be American. On the other hand, many Italian mondo-films do not use the word "mondo". Ca 1962- |
