Final Fantasy 5 is the only FF-game on Super Nintendo which Square hasn't translated. They had plans to do it, but you know Square USA. They ignored it and released Final Fantasy Mystic Quest instead and it isn't a good RPG, you know. But, there is a translation of FF5 made by RPGe and it's very good. I strongly recommend you to download the patch at the Translations section.

The game is about four heroes who are supposed to save the world (Surprised, aren't ya?). In the beginning you see when Lenna is talking to her father, king Tycoon. He says that he has to go because the wind has stopped and he feels that something isn't right. Then Lenna also goes on a journey and meets Butz, who is the main character, when a meteor crashes. When they have talked a few minutes suddenly they hear a voice. It's Galuf, shouting for help. He has got a big headache and can't remember a thing. They chat a while and after that they go their own ways. But the way to the Tycoon castle is blocked so they try to find another way, separated from each other. Then an earthquake acquires but Butz saves the others. Now they decide to join their ranks to find a way out of there. Soon they discover a cave and go trough it where they found a bunch of pirates. The pirates have a ship, of course, so Butz and the others try to steal it, but the captain Faris catches them and places them in jail. Later when they are at the sea Faris sees Lenna's pendant and let them all free. Now the long journey begins.

The music in FF5 has kind of special instruments in contrast to the other FF games. It's hard to describe in which way, but you can always play the game. You won't understand what I mean if you only listen to the mod's at this page, you have to play the real game. However, the music is very good, and one of my personal favourite tunes is the one called "Dragon" and the battle theme is also very good.

From being a little bit Nes like in FF4, the graphics has been developed to real Snes graphics in FF5. For being a game from 1992 it looks very good, sometimes even better than newer games like Lufia 2. One thing that hasn't developed much is the map, but that's also the only thing. Actually I think the FF4 map was reused here, but who cares when everything else is very good?

The fights in FF5 are the same as always, except the "FF6-gauge" that was invented here. One big difference is the skills that have been replaced with the job-ability here. You can now choose jobs like White Mage and thief (!) for each character. When the job-level goes up you will learn a new technique and can use it as an ability a chose another job. That means that you for example can give Lenna the ability "Black magic", which she has learned earlier, and the job "White Mage". Now she is a black magic user who also can cast Cure! This maybe sound a little bit complicated but you will understand it when you play the game.
