Colonel Driant and Bois
des Caures
Some meters from Driantīs
command-post
beside the road D125 is the location for this
pill-box.
There is the bunker, used as a
commandpost
of Colonel Driant. Here in the "Bois de Caures"
they where waiting for the German attack against
Verdun in February 1916.
The bunker from a German view
The bunker surroundings has many
waterfilled craters.
The ground has deep scars.
The bunker back.
Some hundred meters further on;
a concrete construction.
Barbed wire is still very common
in the forest.
Also the screws.
Still man deep trenches after more
than 80 years.
No further on here.
Fine trenches.
Sometimes at Verdun
battlefield,things comes
up in my mind.....Like this abowe;i walk
in the woods and suddenly i can see my car.
Here i am in the year 2000 as an tourist
and me and my car is placed just between
advanced Germans and defending French
soldiers....
Today is the former battlefield very silent
and the birdīs are singing and everything
is very far away from war.
84 years afterwards, things are different indeed!
Memorial to the 56čme and 59čme
Bataillons de
Chasseurs ā Pied and their commander Colonel Driant.
On our way to the spot where Colonel
Driant was
mortally wounded.
And finally;Colonel Driantīs field grave.
