The purpose of this project was to collect current data of the use
of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
approved Personal Computer Aviation Training Devices (PCATDs)
and non-approved training aids used for flight training at University
Aviation Association (UAA) members and make a database of the information. There
was no good estimate of preferred types of PCATDs
or training aids at UAA member institutions.
The researcher collected the data with the help of a questionnaire sent
by mail or over the telephone. Demographic questions about the institution
and questions about their use of the PC-based flight simulators was
also included in the questionnaire. The questions about the use of the
PC-based flight simulators were basically limited to see if training was
done for the private pilot certificate, instrument rating, commercial
certificate and/ or the multi-engine rating.
The data collected came from
47 UAA institutions; these institutions were
the only ones out of the 113 institutions investigated that owned a PCATD
or training aid. The study concluded that the UAA
institutions use a total of 118 PCATDs and 79
training aids towards flight training. The most frequently used PCATD was made by Jeppesen, and
the most frequently used training aid was made by Microsoft.
