The History of Domsjö Pulp Mill !

The name MoDo comes from the names of two communities on the the Mo River in northern Sweden.

Mo is a few kilometres upstream; Domsjö lies where the river empties into the Golf of Bothnia.

1903 Domsjö mill was founded, 150 employees, 6 000 tonnes.
1914 A second drying machine was built.
1918 The mill got electricity
1919 17 330 tonnes.
1920 The pulp price was 627 SEK/tonnes.
1923 The first bleach plant was built.
1931 A third drying machine was built.
1933 The entire production is bleached.
1933 50 634 tonnes of which 1 006 tonnes was dissolving.
1934 A barking drum was built.
1940 Alcohol plant, 10 000 tonnes of 96% ethanol.
1950 The first evaporation stage was built.
1954 79 000 tonnes.
1954 A new wood-handling.
1959 Converted from calcium to sodium-base.
1964 Storage of chips.
1965 A new wood-handling.
1967 Shift system with year-round operation.
1972 Sedimentation basins for recovery of fibres was built.
1975 5½ -shift system.
1976 A new bleach plant was built, ECHD.
1979 The production of dissolving pulp was shut down mainly due to
environmental reasons (approx. 15 million dissolving bales).
1980 A new pulp deresination method.
1982 A new, big, dry, barking drum was built.
1985 Partly closed washing system.
1985 AGA plant, 10 000 tonnes of carbon-dioxide.
1985 Biological treatment plant, an anaerobic biological system.
1988 Domsjö mill was the first pulp mill in the world with
completely chlorine-free pulp.
1989 Permanent 6-shift system, 3 weeks on-3 weeks off.
1991 Paper grades are bleached in a completely closed bleach loop.
Brightness 90 % ISO.
1992 Domsjö mill received the ISO 9001 quality certification.
1993 Dissolving is produced again, two stage cooking,
followed by bleaching with a closed-loop technique using no
chlorine containing bleaching chemicals.
1995 Salmon trout and salmon are once again migrating past the mill
on their way up the Mo River to spawn.
1996 A new biological stage was built.
An activated sludge stage and a final sedimentation stage.
1997 The Environment Prize of Örnsköldsvik's Municipality was this
year awarded to Domsjö pulp mill.The prize was presented
by Anna Lind, Swedish Minister of Environment :
.....for efforts far beyond authority demands to reduce emission
into water, and active and successful co-operation in the
restoration of the Mo River.....
1997 193 567 tonnes of which 130 935 tonnes was dissolving.
1998 A Displacement Press was installed.
1998 MoDo has entered into discussions with Rottneros
concerning sale of Domsjö pulp mill.
1998 MoDo´s Board decided at its meeting (August 11, 1998)
that MoDo should continue production at Domsjö.
2000 MoDo has reached an agreement to sell its pulp business in Domsjö .
The purchaser is Domsjö Fabriker AB, a company owned by six
private individuals (Malcolm Norlin, Dick Carrick, Peter Ekman, Tore Erkén,
Lars Nordin and Hans von Schreeb).

The Domsjö mill produces 220 000 tonnes per year of chlorine-free bleached pulp.
Presently, approximately 350 employees are working at the mill.
